4 June 2024Data Disaster or Anxiety Averted?
Picture the scene: it’s your average Saturday evening. Well, maybe not so average because the sun is out. But anyway, you’re in the garden, the BBQ is fired up, your friends are sipping on drinks and laughing together. It’s idyllic, but all of a sudden, the peace is shattered.
The phone rings – it’s a call from your rather distressed IT Manager saying that systems are down. Panic sets in. The culprit? No-one is quite sure, but a cyber-attack seems likely. Weekend ruined? Well, that depends…
DO YOU HAVE A PLAN?
Without a practised disaster recovery plan and modern data backup systems, your entire business is potentially at risk. While most customers we speak to do have a recovery plan, very few have been in a situation where they have managed to successfully invoke it and truly test their people and processes.
We’ve noticed in the last few months an increase in conversations around the skills gap, too. For instance, some of our customers’ teams know data recovery well and have processes in place, but they might not be practised at carrying them out. They may not have been that far down the line with varying types of attacks before.
Then comes the technology. Technology promises all the tools you need, but do your people know how to manage the alerts, operate it across different platforms, and understand what needs to be recovered? There can be a lot to consider.
GETTING THE BASICS RIGHT
Cybersecurity for data protection can understandably feel like a daunting topic – as can the prospect of fully protecting your data. But there are immediate things you can do to keep your organisation safe. At Harbor, that’s why we regularly discuss the basics of cybersecurity with our customers.
Whether it’s your communication plan, two-factor authentication, or intelligent recovery, there are simple steps that everyone can take – steps that you might not be aware of or currently actioning. In many instances, it’s the small measures that remain some of the best ways to guard against attacks.
In our experience, we’ve seen time and time again that if you can get the basics right, you can use your IT budget more effectively – rather than trying to buy your way out of a problem. After all, technology is important, but it is not guaranteed to magically give you the outcomes you desire.
