            The State of Ransomware Selling in the UK

            In recent times, the cybersecurity landscape has been dominated by the disturbing presence of ransomware. Threat actors are becoming increasingly sophisticated, leaving businesses vulnerable to devastating attacks that can halt operations, compromise sensitive data, and lead to severe financial consequences. In spite of all this, why do we use scare tactics to entice people to buy into our services?

            As a professional in the IT industry with 17 years’ experience, I find it disheartening to witness how fear is being used as a selling tactic by some companies offering ransomware protection and cyber recovery solutions.

            The rise of fear-based selling

            Over the last six months, I’ve noticed a prevalent trend in the marketing of ransomware protection solutions – fear-based selling. Every presentation or webinar I attended painted a doomsday scenario for ransomware attacks. While it is essential to recognise the severity of the threat, inundating customers with scare tactics can be off-putting, to put it mildly! CIOs, CSOs, and infrastructure managers are well aware of the risks, and it is time to move beyond the fear-based approach.

            It’s time for a different perspective

            Rather than perpetuating fear, I believe companies should adopt a more empowering approach when presenting their products and services. Maybe it’s my soft nature or people-centric approach to things, but if anything, people should be pitching themselves as rays of hope to help organisations effectively recover their data and get their operations back on track.

            The data protection and recovery landscape has already become increasingly complex for organisations to navigate, and it can also be very overwhelming. We believe in simplifying the process, not making it harder.
